Dragonfly in Amber is the second book in the Outlander series of novels by Diana Gabaldon. Centered on time travelling 20th century nurse Claire Randall and her 18th century Scottish Highlander warrior husband Jamie Fraser, the books contain elements of historical fiction, romance, adventure and fantasy. This installment chronicles Claire and Jamie's efforts to prevent the Jacobite rising that Claire knows will end disastrously for the Scots. A television adaptation of the series, called Outlander, premiered on Starz in August 2014. The show's second season—which aired May through July 2016—was based on the events of Dragonfly in Amber.

2020 is apparently going to be the year of "...wait, what do you mean that's the end?!" for me.

I will wait for my Audible credits to come in before buying the next one. It's only a few days. Please wish me luck in this.

Unlike the first one, which felt like it started slowly, this started with some pretty intense feelings and honestly remained high through most of the book. If you liked the first one, this is a great follow-up. I liked that it roped me right back into the world, despite having read the first one a bit ago. It answers questions, it brings up new ones, it links back a ton of things from the first book in a very interesting way, and I have about a dozen things I want to look into historically.

This jumps forward in time from the end of the first …

I had a hard time with this in the beginning, and I still think it was too long, but once I realized at this point in the story, it's not really a romance anymore, and more of a saga, or an adventure book, I enjoyed it more. There are still many parts that are skimmable, but I liked it, and of course, now I want to read the next one immediately.

I really like this series and enjoy reading it. This is my third read however and I find myself skipping pages to get on with the story. While the story is still good and I love it I do find issue with the writing itself. Mostly it is the weird changes of storytellers perspective and the skipping between timelines. At one point in "Voyager" Claire talks to someone and with barely a new paragraph and no further introduction we find her telling a story about something in the past including a switch from "I" to "she was traveling to ..." Makes me a bit sad I remember devouring these books (and I still do) but I never noticed these style issues before.
