Tanukidanisan Fudō-in is a Buddhist temple located in the Ichijōji area of Kyoto, nestled in the mountains. It was founded in 1718, when the monk Mokujiki Shōzen Tomoatsu discovered a cavern and enshrined a statue of Fudō Myō’ō, the Immovable Wisdom King.

The temple was re-established in 1944 and is now known as a place of prayer for health and protection from illness.

The temple grounds feature around 300 statues of raccoon dogs (tanuki), which are regarded as lucky symbols, especially for merchants and athletes.

Climb 250 steps to reach the temple grounds. The temple is built on a cliff, reminiscent of Kyoto’s iconic Kiyomizu-dera.
