first of all: it's a very impressionistic description of a travel up the river Yangtze, not a travel guide. there are loose anecdotes and always a great sense of style and vivid telling in the phrases of the early twentieth century. but it is not a peek into china 1913 or less than you might think. you get a european traveller instead, not often reflecting but always amazed. and the less he thinks the better, cause all his thinking is some racist crap.

den text zu bewerten ist nicht leicht: als marxisitische kritik ist er, vor allem in seiner verständlichkeit, wichtig gegen die falschen allgemeinplätze über "wirtschaft" und "kapitalismus", die unseren mainstream ausmachen. und auch sein hoffnungsvoller grundton ist wichtig, auch wenn unsere aktuelle politikerfahrung meist widersprechen will. die eigene theorie kann die schrift dann aber nicht reflektieren oder wirklich aktualisieren. es bleibt aber eine schöne einführung in marxistisches denken.

how odd! was excited by the promise to discover the roaring twenties in germany without looking for the approaching shadow of the third reich the whole time. was a little bit embarassed that fascism started by a whim and self pity this way. it is a great and vivid description of the arts, ideas of the time with a nice bit of real life sprinkled within. but it lacks in a theory or an intention to give this collection --or rather encyclopedia-- substance i think.

vorab, das buch ist anfang der vierziger des zwanzigsten jahrhunderts geschrieben worden, enthält antisemitismus und rassismus als geschichtsschreibung getarnt. am verwunderlichsten fand ich noch, das es 1976(!) unverändert (Bertelsmann Verlag) mit lobesworte für den verstorbenen autor gedruckt werden konnte.

gleichzeitig ist es ein "bunter strauß" westfälischer geschichte, ich habe es nicht als wissenschaftliches werk, sonderns als fundgrube interessanter anekdoten gelesen. aber auch dafür ist es eigentlich zu unergiebig, jedenfalls im gesamtumfang. bleibt noch der nutzen für die zeitgeschichte "geschichtsschreibung im dritten reich".
