A Darker Shade of Magic is an enthralling tale set in a world of parallel Londons, each with its own unique magic system. Schwab's vivid world-building and well-developed characters keep readers engaged throughout the story making it hard to put the book down. The only downside is that the pacing can be uneven at times, but overall with this being the first book in the series I’m excited for what’s to come.

2.5 ⭐️though under 200 pages, provides a decent read with its intriguing concept and brisk pacing, yet lacks the depth and complexity needed to fully captivate readers.

Alex Michaelides: The Fury (2024, Celadon Books) 3 stars

Review of 'The Fury' on 'Goodreads'

3 stars

While the story is intriguing and the characters are well-developed, the pacing is uneven, and the plot twists feel predictable. The unreliable narrator adds an interesting layer to the story, but it's not enough to elevate the novel above mediocrity. Overall, it's a decent read, but not one that will leave a lasting impression.

Kate Alice Marshall: What Lies in the Woods (2023, Flatiron Books) 4 stars

A tale of mystery, friendship, and secrets. The novel's well-developed characters, including the determined protagonist Naomi, her loyal friend Olivia, and the enigmatic detective Jonathan, are brought to life through their complex relationships and personal struggles. The story unfolds with unexpected twists and turns that keep readers engaged and guessing until the very end. This psychological thriller is a great read, as it explores the depths of human nature and the consequences of buried secrets.

Marshall’s propulsive mystery-cum-psychological drama (after What Lies in the Woods) plunges readers into the precarious …

A clever blend of fantasy and mystery that starts strong but loses some momentum. The worldbuilding is imaginative, and the characters are likable, but the plot meanders at times. An entertaining read overall, albeit with some pacing issues.

Profound and utterly captivating. Van Pelt's exquisite novel about a widow's unlikely bond with a remarkably intelligent octopus is a masterpiece. A poignant exploration of grief, healing, and life's wonders that will immerse you in its vivid storytelling. Uplifting and unforgettable - a must-read.

2.5 interesting premise but fails to fully deliver, with a story that feels somewhat lacking in depth and character development. It’s an okay read but doesn’t quite live up to the author’s usual standards.
