Suzette Mayr: Sleeping Car Porter (2022, Coach House Books)

Winner of Canada's top literary prize (Giller)

As a Canadian, I try to read the books that have been shortlisted for the Giller prize, (Canada's biggest fiction prize). Fresh story and topic, about a (closeted) gay man working as a porter on a cross-Canada train ride.

Julia May Jonas: Vladimir (2022, Simon & Schuster)

Don't let the cover art turn you off

I keep recommending this book to friends, and adding, "if there's a bare-chested man on the cover, don't be turned away." This book is a smart and fun take on sexuality in an older (young 60s?) female professor who is also close to a #metoo-style scandal at her small American university. It's a fast, fun, literary read.
