I think these days we're seeing more and more creepypasta/alternative approaches to horror hitting the mainstream. Horror is by definition about subversion. And I think House of Leaves as it stands in 2023 (As of the time of writing) exists as the ancestor of all of it. Movies like Skinamarink and those new ps1-style horror games have the influence of works like this flowing through their veins. But while those works excel (at least in my opinion) because of what they do within the restraints they impose on themselves, both structurally and graphically, this book feels almost cinematic. There are whole chapters that expect you to sit there and read them page to page as one would watch a scene, read at the pace of the action being written about. Maybe it's my ADHD; I really loved that Hugo Cabaret book when I was a kid and this book reminds me of Hugo (but I probably loved that book because it was mostly pictures)
Eventually Netflix is going to give Mark Z. Danielewski his eleven pieces of silver and release some piece of shit 8-12 hour adaptation and structure it like Bandersnatch. Mark Wahlberg will play Will Navidson and you'll watch half of it on your phone, half of it on your television.
Then the Nightmares begin.
