Review of 'Chavs' on 'Storygraph'

5 stars

Still very relevant. Looks at the last 40 years of British politics and studies how the working class lost first its power and then its identity. Shows in many case studies how the working class is ridiculed today. There are parallels in most so called western countries. Hence, it is interesting for an international readership despite its sole focus on the UK.

A very good read for middle class people who are too sure of themselves and want their world view to be shattered a bit or everybody who wants to understand why they have no agency in society.

The book is brilliant, because its message feels so obvious after reading it. It is kinda baffling that it is not mainstream discourse.

This book is based on lots of interviews, statistics and other sources. Often, it needs to prove its points with many anecdotal examples. Therefore, it is not the most captivating and the reading is work.
