Though burdened with clichés and standard situations (even in the seventies), King's third novel is perhaps still his best. While the structure relies heavily on McGuffins and random plot points (room 217, the waiter), the development is flawless, building inevitably towards the end. I would not completely agree with Mr. Straub (“probably the best supernatural novel in a hundred years”), but yes, it's somewhere around the top.
