Norton Glover reviewed Plague of Pythons by Frederik Pohl
A grim, dystopian tale of mind control.

I've never really thought of Frederik Pohl as a horror writer, and he isn't; but this comes really close.
A genuinely bleak view of a world plagued by possessions, with a real downer of an ending. The world is well thought-out, but you'd have to be in particular mood for this one.
There's a great deal of violence, but no gore (it's from 1965)
