One of the best books I’ve read in years

5 stars

I loved this book, as did my two teenage boys. So this is a book that can be enjoyed by a wide range of ages. The book has a rip-roaring story and the protagonist frequently uses science to solve problems (which I liked) while making snide comments (which my kids liked). It’s really plot driven with minimal character development, but that’s OK for this book. The movie they made out of it isn’t bad, either. Recommend very strongly for science, sci-fi, and adventure story lovers.

Amor Towles: A Gentleman in Moscow: A Novel (Paperback, 2019, Penguin Books) 5 stars

When, in 1922, thirty-year-old Count Alexander Rostov is deemed an unrepentant aristocrat by a Bolshevik …

A really great novel

5 stars

I would not have thought I’d have liked a story set around the Russian revolution, but I was wrong. The development of the characters is excellent and you really begin to care for them. They exist within a compelling world of the early 20th century designed by the author. I particularly liked the ending, which was not a small achievement in this book. Highly recommended!

Katharine Hayhoe: Saving Us (AudiobookFormat, 2021, Blackstone Pub) 4 stars

Better than I expected

5 stars

I had middling expectations reading the book. I am familiar with a lot of the arguments that those concerned about climate change use, but this turned out to be a much more interesting and engaging book than I expected. She has a great voice and the stories in the book are really interesting and they lead the reader towards her conclusion, about the value of talking about climate change. I’m still a bit suspicious that just talking to your neighbors will make a big difference, but it won’t hurt! And the book was fun to read.

Leviathan Wakes 4 stars

One of the great sci-if political worlds

5 stars

This book is one of my favorite, and probably the best of the whole series (although the series is quite good even if it tails off towards the end). Pacing and action are fantastic, with just enough character development to make you care about them. And the world the story takes place in is both plausible and believable. Highly recommended.
