I have a lifelong addiction to the written word. I publish books under the pen name L. Rowyn, most of them sff and/or queer and/or romance and/or polyamorous.

Jason June: Jay's Gay Agenda (Hardcover, 2021, HarperTeen, Harperteen) 3 stars

A perfectly good book that is not for me

3 stars

A gay YA rom-com that BookBub sold to me as a gay romance because "rom-com" isn't a book marketing category because book-marketing categories are a disaster.

It's a much better rom-com than it is a romance.

Anyway, it's YA and I'm not a teen so not in the target market. Did like some stuff about it. Like there's one point where a character says "[thing] will not be a problem because [reason]" and I'm like "...I would like you to be right but I strongly suspect NOPE."

And at the end the character turned out to be right! So that was nice.

Veo Corva: The Beautiful Decay (EBook, 2023, Witch Key Fiction) 5 stars

Something strange is happening in sleepy subterranean Tombtown. Necromancers are disappearing. The crypt is changing. …

Excellent! Wonderful character development across the series

5 stars

I backed The Beautiful Decay on Kickstarter, and read it after it was released to backers. I haven’t reviewed it yet, but that’s okay because it was only released to bookstores yesterday. \o/

I love this book; one of the rare cases where I enjoyed a sequel even more than the first book. The Beautiful Decay is the second full-length Tombtown book. I’ve read all the Tombtown stories, and my recommended reading order is:

1) Books & Bone 2) Familiar & Flame 3) The Beautiful Decay

“Making Friends”: Delightful, can be read at any point, doesn’t connect directly to any of the other stories. “Tinker & Terror”: Oddly compelling protagonist; doesn’t really connect to the other books but I recommend reading it after Books & Bone.

The Tombtown stories revolve around necromancers and their friends, both living and undead, and the vast underground warren of interconnected catacombs where they’ve made …

Queer post-apocalyptic adventure

4 stars

Story has a lot of exploration/action/danger mixed in with some romance. The romantic pairing is M/NB, with the NB character the only PoV character. I enjoyed the main protagonist's arc from "timid and stifled" to "brave and resourceful". Fun romp!

I started this book last year but got distracted by life and forgot I'd started it. So I'm just counting yesterday as the start date instead. I'd only read a chapter or two.

Veo Corva: Making Friends (2019, Witch Key Fiction) 4 stars

Gretel’s parents are worried about her. Ever since her grandmother died, she’s been all alone. …

Perfect from the first line

4 stars

The opening line is "Everyone wanted Gretel to make friends, but she was running out of materials" which really tells you everything you need to know about this story. A combination of macabre and adorable, short and fun.

Cool side story

5 stars

The protagonist in this story is the most astonishing combination of "self-absorbed narcissist" and "actually wants to do the right thing." Somehow it works. Short and fascinating.

Courtney Milan: The Governess Affair (Paperback, 2013, Femtopress) 4 stars

The Weirdest Meetcute

5 stars

Man meets woman when she shows up wanting justice from his employer, who raped her.

This is a prequel to The Duchess War. I read the other books in the series first because I couldn't picture the premise for this novella working. But does works well. Lovely story, with one of the most interesting of Milan's sex scenes.

Good to see the Tombtown cast again!

5 stars

I enjoyed this novella -- very interesting to see Usther as a viewpoint character, and to see Usther struggling with her warring impulses between her longing to be powerful and untouchable and her need for real connections.

started reading Familiar & Flame by Veo Corva (Tombtown)

After finishing the latest Haley and Nana novella, I wanted to read another short. I read BOOKS AND BONE, but haven't read any of the Tombtown shorts yet. Bought this on itch.io because that outlet passes the most money to the creator and the Kindle experience is so bad now I no longer care about platform myself.
