Too self aware

I wanted to like this book but it was too self aware, it's "message" was too obvious and you could tell the author was hitting me over the head with it.
I did not like the characters, they seemed distant. I guess it was too intellectual and needed more soul.

Slow to start with, characters are nicely built up and you get to like and understand them in the end. However, I did find some of the emotional hooks a little heavy handed, almost melodrama in places.
