I really enjoyed this modern-day PERSUASION with a mystery twist, until the very end. Suddenly, with no warning, the author interjected a religious aspect out of nowhere and it was very jarring. The book would have been stronger/better without it, or if it had been part of the character all along.

I wish Goodreads would allow a half-star rating. If so, I'd give this book a 3.5. It's not a four, primarily because there was so much sloppy editing/proofreading it was driving me nuts, but the story and characters were solid and interesting. I will read the next in series when it comes out, and hope they've hired someone more competent for the final edits.
That said, it was a little derivative for anyone who's familiar with the more-or-less true adventuress of the Durrell family in Corfu (The Durrells in Corfu TV series or the delightful, witty books by Gerald Durrell).
