reviewed In the Woods by Tana French (Dublin Murder Squad, #1)

Tana French: In the Woods (EBook, 2007, Viking Penguin)

"...she fooled you, too."

Unfortunately, this line didn't work for me because, no she fucking didn't. Maybe I am just too genre-savvy at this point (or simply too not-male), but that little bitch was sus as hell from the get-go. Even before she started shamelessly blowing smoke up our narrator's arse, she was clearly off.

Still rounding up from 3.5 stars because there was a lot more than the "whodunnit" going on here. Good writing, complex and well-developed characters, and interesting procedural drama. Very glad the story didn't simply end with the revelation but got into the complications, and ultimately the failure, of actually bringing the case to justice.

Review of 'The favorite sister' on 'Goodreads'

Brutal satire of girlboss feminism and reality TV.

If you're a messy bitch who lives for drama but also has high standards for quality of prose, depth of characterization, and structural cleverness, this is THE book for you. I am usually wary of Gone Girl comparisons, but this is "Gone Girl if every character was Amy Dunne."

I can definitely imagine a miniseries adaptation with "Good Sister, Bad Sister" by Hole as the opening theme, and I would watch the shit out of it.

Jessica Knoll: Luckiest Girl Alive

HER PERFECT LIFE IS A PERFECT LIE.

I'm really surprised to see people calling this book devoid of emotion and the characters flat. I get not liking Ani because she is awful and not meant to be liked, but she is nevertheless a fascinating character study because the story makes it evident how she intentionally designed herself into an ice-cold ultra-bitch as a form of armor, and that was fascinating to see dissected the way it was. Not to mention her main role model growing up being her superficial, social-climbing, self-absorbed mother whose treatment of her daughter was truly disgusting in a heartbreakingly banal way. All of it felt very real to me.

"If Dark and True Detective had a baby" sums up this book perfectly. If you like either or both of those shows, you will definitely like this. Rich assortment of nightmare fuel. Fucked my mind so good that it's weak in the knees and needs a cigarette.
