Starts slow, picks up nicely

It started very, very slow, with a ballooning cast and too many pages dedicated to background storylines.

Once the book started to focus on its central mystery, things picked up nicely.

This book was too slowly paced for my tastes -- there's too much set-up in the first two thirds of the book that amounts to little moments, then it's all paid off seemingly out of nowhere in the last part.
