I'm actually reading the English version, not the French, but new to Bookwyrm and not sure how to get that. Anyway, loving it so far! About halfway through. Swashbuckling space pirate adventure and a real page-turner.

Generally great! First 350 pages were mind-bending, well written, with fascinating characters and ideas. Last 50 pages kind of fell into B-movie plotlines. I'd still give it four stars though.

Bob Irving reviewed City of Blades by Robert Jackson Bennett (Divine Cities, #2)

I found this a truly original fantasy, esp in terms of setting. It's kinda neo-industrial, with "modern" technology: cars, rifles, etc. What really hooked me was some original and very likeable characters and a fast-moving plot. Also, the book was not a 1000 page fantasy novel! Less than half that.
I would have given it 5 starts except for the whole "the gods are dead but wait they're not really" angle. Probably just personal taste, but I find there's no way to introduce divinities in a fantasy to my satisfaction. It usually ends up sounding kind of lame or forced. But it was a fun read and I've already gotten the first one to read next.
Bob Irving reviewed So Many Roads by Sean Runnette

I was never a Deadhead and kinda lost touch with the band after Workingman's Dead, so most of this was new to me. However, it's a fascinating look at the creative process that stayed largely intact over 5 decades and the personalities that made it all happen. It made me want to find a lot of this music and give it a listen, and that's pretty high praise for the book.
Bob Irving reviewed The autobiography of Donovan by Donovan
Review of 'The autobiography of Donovan' on 'Goodreads'

Since Donovan's music formed a big part of the background music of my adolescence, I really enjoyed his story of his life and music. Yes, he takes credit for lots that he probably wasn't responsible for, and yes, he seems pretty chauvinistic in his approach to some women. But he's one of the seminal figures of that era and is still making music that defies categorization.
