I couldn't put this book down. And I don't like long multi-book series as a whole. Unlike others, I enjoyed the religious conversations, the mysticism, even the descriptions of planets. I liked Raul and his sense of humor, and I even went for the romance between Raul and Aenea.

To contrast, I read this after reading Fire Upon the Deep by Vinge and found this much more engrossing.
