(English below) Die „Sheets“-Serie hatte ich schon so lange auf meiner Liste. Teil 1 hat mich sehr berührt und ich habe manche Seiten lange angeschaut und wirken lassen. Die Farbgebung spricht so stark wie die Handlung und teilweise noch mehr als die Sprechblasen. Emotionen kommen so sehr stark rüber: Traurigkeit, Trauer und Einsamkeit der Protagonistin. Genau so stark wirkt dann aber auch die behutsam aufgebaute Verbindung zu einer zweiten Figur. Dass der erste Teil nicht tragisch abschließt habe ich dringend gebraucht. Und das Ende hat mir auch eine große, positive Gänsehaut gegeben.

Teil 2 und 3 warten schon schon auf dem Reader auf mich ✨

(English) The ‘Sheets’ series had been on my list for so long. Part 1 moved me deeply, and I spent a long time looking at some of the pages and letting them sink in. The colour scheme is as powerful as the plot, and in some cases even more so than the speech bubbles. The emotions come across very strongly: the sadness, grief and loneliness of the protagonist. But the carefully constructed connection to a second character is just as strong. I really needed the first part not to end tragically. And the ending gave me heavy, positive goosebumps.

Parts 2 and 3 are already waiting for me on my reader ✨

(English below) Das hatte ich schon im Mai in England in der Hand und habe es dann wegen Platz / Gewicht im Koffer nicht gekauft. Kein Problem mehr mit meinem neuen E-Reader 💪 Was in „Spent“ auf die Waage kommt: miteinander verwobene Story Lines rund um Alison, ihre Partnerin, deren queeren Community und Ziegen Sanctuary. Aufgebaut auf realitäts(nahen) Vorbildern steht alles mit einem Hufen auch im Fiktionalen. Ich mag diese Doppelbödigkeit, die sich durchzieht: Farmleben vs Influencerin auf Social Media, Polycule in jüngeren und älteren Beziehungen, Alison in der Novel vs. ihre dort gefeaturte Streaming-Serie , Blickwinkel auf die Familiengeschichte durch Alisons Augen und die ihrer schmerzhaft konservativen Schwester uswusw.

Es ist wie immer bei Bechdel: Zum drin Versinken und mitfühlen. Es gibt die rückhaltendgebende Wärme der queeren chosen family. Leiden und Ragen über die politische Weltlage. Lachenund Awwww-en über die kleinen Ziegen.

Auf dem E-Reader habe ich immer wieder rangezoomt, um Bechdels toll gemalten oder witzigen Details genauer anzuschauen. Werde ich immer wieder mal lesen.

Auf jeden Fall ein Empfehlung von mir!

I already had this in my hands in England in May, but didn't buy it because of space/weight in my suitcase. No more problem with my new E-Reader 💪 What comes into play in “Spent”: interwoven storylines around Alison, her partner, their queer community, and goat sanctuary. Based on (near) reality, everything is also rooted in fiction. I like the ambiguity that runs through it: farm life vs. social media influencer, polycule in younger and older relationships, Alison in the novel vs. her streaming series featured there, perspectives on family history through Alison's eyes and those of her painfully conservative sister, etc., etc.

As always with Bechdel, it's something to immerse yourself in and empathize with. There is the supportive warmth of the queer chosen family. Suffering and rage about the political world situation. Laughter and “awwws” about the little goats.

On my e-reader, I kept zooming in to take a closer look at Bechdel's beautifully painted or funny details. I will read it again and again.

Definitely a recommendation from me!

Das nxte Buch in unserem Lesekreis. Heute beim Verlag bestellt. Mag am liebsten direkt loslegen und bin sehr ungeduldig ...

Even the foreword strikes a nerve: "Since I started writing this novel, I’ve been amazed – and terrified – by how much of it is already coming true. A splintering Europe, the rise of authoritarian states in the West, the backlash against so-called minorities." The author wrote these words back in 2017 – let that sink in...

The plot is set only slightly ahead of our time, reaching into the 2040s. Its piercing glimpses into our present-day reality honestly gave me more than one nightmare-night when reading just before bed-time. The characters illustrate how urgent it is to begin now with what Arne Semsrott calls "prepping love": building structures and alliances, developing skills and knowledge – everything that can be shared with those who will need it. Anyone who ticks one or more boxes: queer, trans, non-binary, disabled, sex worker, BIPoC. The book presses a dystopian finger into wounds that are already open. (Side note: It’s a dystopia that isn’t centred around reproduction.) It covers the topics and representations so often missing from other novels – and that’s crucial and heartening, especially as the characters band together into a movement of resistance. But: it’s not particularly well written. Again and again, I found myself pulled out of the story – and it pains me to say so.

What doesn’t work for me: • Everything is spelled out. Characters voice and think through every message they are meant to convey, and some seem created solely for that purpose. Their traits and histories are likewise overexplained. At times, the author slips into something close to rage mode when describing them – understandable given the themes, but honestly, I’d prefer reading that tone on Mastodon. In a novel, it becomes tiresome. If the book had trusted its readers a bit more and conveyed its points with more subtlety (some might say: with more literary craft), the impact would have been even stronger. • After the halfway mark, the story starts to drag. We read it in a queer-feminist book club; 2 out of 4 of us didn’t make it to the end.

What works for me: • Pinar and Ash are characters who stay with you long after the last page. • Elias’s storyline moved me, too. (Though, admittedly, Elias mainly serves as a reminder of how dangerous it is to forget history...) • The final chapters build up real momentum – from there on, you simply can’t put the book down. • The novel aims to lift a particular message and feeling into flight – and yes, it succeeds.

[English below] Das ist so: Ich lese wirklich nicht nur Belletristik und will nicht immer nur hochtrabend über Literatur sprechen. Und vor allen Dingen unterstütze ich gerne kleine Indie-Verlage, wir können uns glücklich schätzen, in Deutschland noch einige zu haben. Dementsprechend auch grundsätzlich all meinen blauglitzernden Support für den Querverlag! Aber. Nicht das, nicht „Einmal noch“, für mich zumindest nicht (das mag ich betonen, it‘s me. Gebt ihr dem Buch bitte selbst eine Chance, es hat allgemein sehr gute Bewertungen! Meine schwankt zwischen 2,5 und 3.) - Hier wurde mit dem Anspruch geschrieben, keine platte Schmonzette, keine platte Schicksalslitanei zu schreiben. Deep soll es sein: Der Background und das zu tragende Päckchen der Figuren. Ihre Dialoge. Ihre Verantwortung füreinander. Bleibt aber eher gewollt und konstruiert, ziemlich steif und sehr frontal auserzählt und manche Fäden gehen dann doch auch verloren. - Dabei kommt all das ungefiltert; manches hätte auch eine CN verdient. Zum Beispiel gibt es: Suizidale Gedanken, starke Trauer und Trauma, häusliche Gewalt, NS-Zeit und Antisemitismus, lebensbedrohliche Krankheit, Unfallschilderung, Verstoßen werden wegen Schwul sein, Übergeben. (Und fatshaming. Das scheint aber im Autor drin zu sein und ist nicht geplottet.) Trotz allem geht es dabei um sehrsehr privilegierte Figuren. Ich konnte die Figuren nie ganz >>fühlen<<, sie bleiben im Roman immer ganz Träger*innen ihres Schicksals. Na ja und der Schluss … - Die sehr gekünstelten Dialoge haben mich wirklich jeden Nerv gekostet, I‘m sorry to say. Allein, das j e d e r Sprechakt den Vornamen der angesprochenen Person enthält. Argh! I can‘t! - Ach, naja und ich muss gestehen. Ich lese gerne schwule Sexszenen. Schade, dass die ausgespart wurden : ) Nichtsdestotrotz: Dies war mein Abend Buch vor dem Einschlafen und ich habe es dann doch noch gespannt aufgeschlagen, um zu erfahren wo Umberto - Daniele - Debora - Umberto - Debora - Daniele - Umberto mit ihren namensreichen Dialogen enden werden.

Not this one, not Einmal noch—at least not for me (and I want to emphasize that: it’s me. Please give this book a chance yourselves; it has received very positive reviews overall!). • This was written with the clear ambition not to be a shallow romance or a mere litany of tragedies. It aims to be deep: the background, the characters’ backstories, their dialogues, their responsibilities toward one another. But it feels more forced and constructed—quite stiff, very on-the-nose in its storytelling, and some narrative threads ultimately get lost. • Everything is presented unfiltered; some parts would have warranted a content note. For example, the book contains: suicidal thoughts, intense grief and trauma, domestic violence, the Nazi era and antisemitism, life-threatening illness, an accident description, being disowned for being gay, vomiting. (And fat-shaming. But that seems to come from the author rather than being an intentional plot point.) Despite all this, the characters remain very privileged. I never truly felt them; they always stayed mere carriers of their fates. And then the ending… well. • The highly artificial dialogues drove me up the wall, I’m sorry to say. Especially the fact that every single section of dialogue includes the other person’s first name oder and over again. Argh! I can’t! • Oh, and I must admit—I enjoy reading gay sex scenes. Shame they were left out. : ) That said: This was my bedtime book, and I still picked it up eagerly each night to find out where Umberto – Daniele – Debora – Umberto – Debora – Daniele – Umberto and their name-heavy dialogues would lead in the end.

Mein neues "abends vor dem Einschlafen lesen"-Buch. // My new "reading before falling asleep" book.

I especially recommend My Cat Yugoslavia if … 1. … you don’t just read light fiction but also enjoy “working” with a book. Don’t get me wrong: you can absolutely read this book “just like that.” It’s brilliantly written (and, consequently, masterfully translated) and cleverly plotted. It pulls you in quickly. It tackles heavy and familiar themes in a fresh, artful way. (See also point 2.) 2. … you can handle the following content notes (which, unfortunately, aren’t included in the book itself). It’s important to emphasize that these topics neither take center stage nor dominate the narrative. But they are present: strong sexism, misogyny, sexual violence, domestic violence, war themes, displacement, racism, toxic romantic relationships, and internalized homophobia. There’s one more I can’t mention because it’s a spoiler. The way these themes are told—often not in full, direct force—made them manageable for me. 3. … you pick it up again at the right moment and revisit key passages after your first read. Here’s the crucial part: the title refers to a cat. Cats and snakes are key motifs that carry essential themes and likely won’t be fully decoded on the first read. By going back, you’ll notice the italicized lines more consciously and can better connect and interpret them in hindsight. I discussed this book with my queer-feminist book club. We dove deep into the story, exploring different striking passages and interpretations, eventually deciphering and interpreting the two animal motifs. The fictional biographies presented remain tough, but engaging with this piece of brilliant literature in our book club made me really happy.

Das ist eine starke Buchempfehlung, an die drei „wenns“ geknüpft sind. Ich empfehle dir „Meine Katze Jugoslawien“ ganz besonders, wenn … 1. du nicht nur Unterhaltungsliteratur liest, sondern es auch magst, mal mit einem Buch zu „arbeiten“. Don‘t get me wrong: Du kannst dieses Buch durchaus „einfach so“ lesen. Es ist absolut fabelhaft geschrieben (und folglich meisterinnenlich übersetzt) und geplottet. Es zieht dich schnell rein. Es behandelt schwere und bekannte Themen auf eine neue, kunstvolle Weise. (Siehe auch Punkt 2). 2. du mit den folgenden CN umgehen kannst (die leider nicht im Buch selbst stehen), die aber, das ist mir sehr wichtig zu betonen, weder im Vordergrund stehen, noch den überwiegenden Raum einnehmen. Aber sie kommen vor: Starker Sexismus, Misogynie, sexuelle Gewalt, familiäre Gewalt, Kriegsthemen, Flucht, Rassismus, toxische Liebesbeziehungen, internalisierte Homofeindlichkeit. Eines, das mir noch einfällt, kann ich nicht nennen, weil Spoiler. Dadurch, wie diese Themen erzählt werden (meist nicht mit voller Wucht direkt), waren sie für mich gut zu handeln. 3. du nach dem ersten Lesen zu einem passenden Zeitpunkt noch mal von vorne anfängst und dir wichtige Stellen noch mal genauer anschaust. Denn hier kommen wir zum Entscheidenden: Titelgebend ist eine Katze. Katzen und Schlangen sind wichtige Motive, die wesentliche Themen transportieren und wahrscheinlich nicht beim ersten Lesen entschlüsselt werden werden. Wenn du dir die Stellen noch einmal anschaust, entdeckst du bewusster die kursiven Zeilen und kannst sie dann rückblickend zuordnen und interpretieren. Ich habe dieses Buch mit meinem queerfeministischen Lesekreis besprochen. Wir haben uns über unterschiedliche markante Stellen und Lesarten immer tiefer in das Buch förmlich rein gelegt und am Ende auch die beiden Tier-Motive dechiffriert / interpretiert. Die vorgestellten fiktionalen Biografien bleiben hart. Aber der Umgang mit diesem Stück großartiger Literatur im Lesekreis, hat mich sehr glücklich gemacht.
