@tpr the character is bi and is acknowledged as such and its not a big deal in either this book nor the second. And if done respectfully everything can be a plot device. The author exploits the readers possible assumptions of heteronormitivity during the first relevant scene so that the reader can reflect why they might find themselves surprised when the second romance interest is introduced. You yourself are appreciated his sexuality as a relevant aspect of the book in your review, even though if you believe what you just said then you shouldn't have even though to acknowledge it, because being bi is just as normal as being anything.
