also here's a similarity between herbert's and tolkien's work that i really should've seen coming: they both really want me to read their poetry. i feel like herbert's is no good though.. either that or i'm reading it wrong. his poems are supposed to be songs so i'm reading them out loud and trying to apply a somewhat musical cadence to it and it's just. not. working.
