Content warning PSA, drug safety, psychonaut wiki journal app broken on purpose, really fucking bad.
if you’re using psychonaut wiki journal and have it installed through any app store, immediately turn off automatic updates and do not update to version 12.0 (android, no idea what the situation is for apple devices).
whoever is maintaining the app just pushed an update that puts its core functionality behind a paywall: “you can continue to log your 3 most used substances. get premium to log more substances.”
this immediately puts users in serious danger without any warning or a convenient way to go back. many could be suddenly finding themselves unable to log substance intake while relying on it for their safety, whether for recreational substances or prescription medication.
it’s difficult to describe how irresponsible and stupid it is to roll out such an update. while it might not bother a casual weed user, it will immediately affect anyone trying to log an ingestion of a rarely-used, high-risk substance precisely because the only way to use it safely is to strictly limit intake over time and take tolerance breaks, so it probably won’t make the top 3 list. the last fucking thing you want to do in a moment like this is fumbling with a paywall and trying to log the ingestion somewhere else to not forget about it. if they even have the means to pay immediately, that is, which many marginalized drug users might not.
the “get premium” screen says it’s “free for anyone who can’t afford it” asking to email the author, which would be nice if it wasn’t way too late for anyone who already got the update and just took something they need to log.
fuck this nonsense, time to look for a decent fork/replacement.
currently waiting for that dose of lisdex to hit to have the executive function to do an export/downgrade/import, so I can actually log it. half-expecting them to have changed the data export format to make it more difficult or some bullshit like this.
UPDATE: the last open source version for android, 11.11, is still available on f-droid but it fails to import data exported from 12.0. it looks like there is no explicit version tag in the exported json, so it must be a schema change. any updates on how to get around this will be posted in this thread and a note will be added below.
NOTE: the app is marked “not safe for work” and possibly “outdated” in f-droid, so default search settings may hide it from search results. it’s still there, but you might need to change the settings to find and install it.
