Broad range of tastes, but I love reading books by Olga Tokarczuk, Corey Doctorow, Ursula Kröber Le Guin, Peter Watts, Haruki Murakami ... the list would go on forever 😅

eyelit reviewed Empusion by Olga Tokarczuk
A twist on Manns Zauberberg, with it's own character.
5 stars
The setting, the men and manliness and the development of the main character, are the elements which invoke the Zauberberg by Thomas Mann. The mysticism, foreboding, science and philosophy are the elements I came to associate with works by Olga Tokarczuk. It is astonishing how the hints given try to lead the reader to conclusions, only to reveal a twist later on. Even to a reader comming prepared and even when you think you have revealed a ruse, another trap will get you. This makes the read very interesting. Overall, it was a great read. It was the first book by the author I ever read and it made me instantly want to read more by her.
eyelit finished reading Empusion by Olga Tokarczuk
Great read, the main character is quite likeable with the naivety. The story is littered with signs of foreboding, like the chairs, which are hinting at violence, just to turn out to be a device of protection instead. It contains many twists like that. Of course, it is also a great homage to Tomas Mann's Zauberberg. But where Zauberberg ends in war, making all the learning and developping futile, Empusion ends after a complete transformation on a very positive note.
