Zeiss & ASML were infringing on Nikon immersion lithography patents, and Nikon was asking for significant royalties. They started acquiring camera patents, and got close to an import ban of Nikon cameras in the US. But they needed to demonstrate they had a product. So that's when Zeiss introduced this camera.
