Scalzi is good at making you think while entertaining you. How would people interact if they were stuck in their minds? What would crime look like? What new abilities might they have, with assistive technology? What different risks do they have?

Lock-in is a police procedural in a near-future. It ends with some un-tied ends, which I suspect will be picked up in a subsequent book (or several, who knows). That said, I recommend that you give this book a chance.
