ghostbetweenpages commented on Paradise Lost (Norton Critical Editions) by John Milton
Content warning Homophobia mention (no actual homophobia though, it just reads like it in an amusing way). Also, PL book 4 spoilers.
Knowledge forbidden? Suspicious, reasonless. Why should their Lord Envy them that? Can it be sin to know? Can it be death? And do they only stand By ignorance? Is that their happy state, The proof of their obedience and their faith?
I knowww he then goes on to say "Ah, fantastic! I can use this to hurt them :)". However. The sentiment in these lines is Correct, Actually!

Sight hateful! sight tormenting! Thus these two Imparadised in one another's arms, The happier Eden, shall enjoy their fill Of bliss on bliss while I to Hell am thrust Where neither joy nor love but fierce desire (Among our other torments not the least) Still unfulfilled with pain of longing pines.
Not 2 make this about Frankenstein, but - obviously the Creature parallels himself with Satan and Victor with God; this bit specifically makes kinda a parallel with the Creature : Satan :: Victor & Elizabeth or Henry : Adam & Eve. That parallel doesn't really run throughout Frankenstein in the same way, but it is making me sad about the Creature and that's what really matters here.

Speaking of Frankenstein (I am always speaking of Frankenstein):
Hence I will excite their minds With more desire to know and to reject Envious commands invented with design To keep them low whom knowledge might exalt Equal with gods. Aspiring to be such, They taste and die: what likelier can ensue?
Something something, speechbubble The Evil Forces Victor Frankenstein Allots His Fate To.

The whole way Eve's subordinance to Adam is described/treated here is just awful :( I know that's just How Society Used To Be etc etc, but, damn :(

Satan to Gabriel:
Gabriel, thou had'st in Heav'n th' esteem of wise And such I held thee, but this question asked Puts me in doubt. Lives there who loves his pain? Gabriel to Satan: But wherefore thou alone? Wherefore with thee Came not all Hell broke loose? Is pain to them Less pain, less to be fled, or thou than they Less hardy to endure?
Buuuuuuuuurn
And I love that this leads into Satan giving a Villain Monologue. Sir, consider: you don't need to tell your enemy all your motivations! Lie a little!
thou and thy gay legions
...I know this is a "Well you guys are HAPPY" thing but it does sound like Satan is homophobic and stuck in 2008 or so.

I also love that God put a whole set of scales in the sky entirely to stop the angels from fighting each other. I think on this he is perhaps a very slightly better dad than Victor Frankenstein, although to be fair Victor did not have the powers to do anything like that.
