Maria is at a bit of a dead-end working at a NYC bookshop. When she finds out her girlfriend cheated on her, she spends her meagre surgery savings on some drugs and steals her girlfriend’s car for a road trip to the pacific. On her way, she stops in Nevada and meets James, who she identifies as a fellow, but closeted, trans woman. This is very much a book that doesn’t give a flying shit about cis readers, or indeed any conventions and I love it for it.
