Essentially an edgy young adult version of Harry Potter. The main character El (the prophesized dark witch, destroyer of worlds, etc.) is hilarious as she struggles against becoming evil, but none of the other characters are particularly interesting. Also, when death is as cheap as it is in this book, it loses its horrifying edge. The same edge that it relies on way too much.
