Tsundoku reviewed This Poison Heart by Kalynn Bayron
Good for Greek Mythology fans and Classics majors
4 stars
When I first read this book I had NO idea that it was a series. I will say it ends on a cliffhanger, and I'm eagerly awaiting the next one.
The premise is an adopted black girl from Brooklyn learns she's heir to a house and duty: an apothecary for the townsfolk. And that her magic powers with plants and immunity to poisons is traced through her lineage.
Her adopted family is so sweet and supportive. Her love interest is a bit different than I'm used to, but not necessarily in a bad way.
This goes deep into Greek Mythology and plays, and does its own plausible interpretation. Also the book was very clear that Achilles was more than friends with his BFF Patroclus, so it gets points for that alone.
This has a wonderful voice, and I feel a little guilty giving it only 4 stars. I'll probably bump it up to 5 at some point.
