Review of 'We Have Always Lived in the Castle' on 'Goodreads'
4 stars
I was a little disappointed in this book after seeing the rave reviews. There was murder and a bit of mystery, but mostly this is a sad story about two mentally ill sisters, their shady cousin and a horribly abusive village.
Pros: Atmospheric, bleak, engaging characters, lot of details to wonder about, chapters 7-10 flow wonderfully to the conclusion, and a protagonist with some kind of ritualized anxiety disorder was interesting
Cons: Walls of rambling text, plot is slow to start, some of the action was confusing, and (just my pet peeve) small points were repeated over and over but a particular story-changing detail was only mentioned once and is easy to miss
I'd still recommend it because this book is short and there's a lot to talk about with the sisters and the village, but for it's length it did take awhile to get to the point.
