📗 "This is the Canon: Decolonize Your Bookshelf in 50 Books" by Joan Anim-Addo, Deirdre Osborne & Kadija Sesay

This is pretty straightforward. It's a book that discusses 50 books published between 1943 and 2019. It aims to give a spotlight to more diverse reads, away from the European empire and its colonization of land and literature.

Every chapter is about one novel. There's a summary of the story, a little background on the book and the author, and a 'if you liked this, you might also like' paragraph that gives even more recommendations to come back to. The novel summaries are quite long and spoilery, so I'd recommend just reading one page and then skipping to the rest if you don't want to know everything about a potential read.

I would love to see more projects/books like these, because one is simply not enough. I liked the book and …

Miki Yamamoto: Smart and Courageous Child No rating

It started out hard for me personally to emphasize with, but as the story went on I feel like I gained an appreciation of what they were feeling, especially the emotions in the second half. I loved checking the red highlights and noticing the few pages with no red at all. The art style really showed the process but that wasn't a bad thing at all.

Mitsuru Hattori: Wash It All Away 01 No rating

I was excited for this one and it was nice to look at, but somehow the specific combination of its presentation kinda pissed me off. Girl, stop working so hard! You're allowed to eat food! What's with all the male gaze shots? Stop and watch the fireworks! I also normally like when manga has pages with no text to let the art shine, but this almost felt more like an art book than a story sometimes... I think it's probably a great book but not for me, not right now.
