Review of 'Die Drenai- Saga 6. Druss, die Legende.' on 'Storygraph'

OK. Despite my love or Tolkien, the Xanth series and other "fantasy" novels, "epic fantasy" is probably not a genre that is written for me.
This did provide a fascinating insight into something I've struggled to understand my whole life—why would someone make a life of going to war? It did so convincingly and empathetically.
Most of the male characters were similarly well defined and convincing.
The female characters, on the other hand, pretty much ruined this novel for me. On the surface, these are "strong" female characters. However, one can only become fully confident in herself when she is desired by a man, the other is a pretty stereotypical black widow character. They are only two female characters, and they never speak to one another. Yes. This was written in 1984. Things have changed. Nevertheless, despite the other interesting characters and willfully ridiculous plot (which I enjoyed), the poorly thought out female characters made reading this book hard going for me.
