Legend deserves praise for the tone and type of story it tells, but it was written in the 1980s and has aged poorly. I think a lot of readers are rating it based on nostalgia and a sense of obligation. When matched up against modern grimdark military fantasy -- even forgiving it for its racist and sexist biases -- this tale is mediocre and an excellent case study of how to identify an author's initial work.

David Gemmell's writing is plagued by the introduction of character viewpoints. I haven't done a count, but there are likely well over 20 viewpoints. Many of these narrations are inserted in order to provide visibility for what would otherwise be writer fiat. This is a sign of weak writing. OK. Despite my love or Tolkien, the Xanth series and other "fantasy" novels, "epic fantasy" is probably not a genre that is written for me.

This did provide a fascinating insight into something I've struggled to understand my whole life—why would someone make a life of going to war? It did so convincingly and empathetically.

Most of the male characters were similarly well defined and convincing.

The female characters, on the other hand, pretty much ruined this novel for me. On the surface, these are "strong" female characters. However, one can only become fully confident in herself when she is desired by a man, the other is a pretty stereotypical black widow character. They are only two female characters, and they never speak to one another. Yes. This was written in 1984. Things have changed.
