Terry Pratchett: Guards! Guards! (Paperback, 2001, HarperTorch)

Here there be dragons...and th denizens of Ankh-Morpork wish one huge firebreather would return from …

Review of 'Guards! guards!' on 'Goodreads'

Pratchett never diappoints. This is a fun and fast paced book that flips the stereotypes on dragons, dwarves and guards. It is funny and easy to read, but also strangely profound and filled with revelations about human nature and friendship and love.
But that's Terry Pratchett, always a master of his craft.

Golriz writes a candid, honest and direct account of her life and experiences becoming a NZ Member of Parliament.
I loved it because it explicitly identifies the issues of racism, representation and migration. Golriz is idealistic but also quite grounded. She is vocal and unflinching while pointing out the challenges and successes of New Zealand politics and society.
It also contains a very straightforward discussion of online hate, the abuse and bul;lying she is constantly subjected to and the measures she's had to take to survive it. Also the role mainstream politics and communications play in the stoking of this hatred.
It is quite refreshing to read this account of a politician who is guided by her ideals. Proud to have supported her and will continue to do so as long as she stands for the ideals she outlines in her writing.

Mike Birbiglia, J. Hope Stein: The New One (Hardcover, 2020, Grand Central Publishing)

Review of 'The New One' on 'Goodreads'

Really intimate, funny and poignant look at being a new parent and learning to love the experience. The disruption of a baby and the ways life changes because of them
Very relatable, sweet and profound.
Really enjoyed it, and the poems that go with it are quite beautiful and sweet.

Bear walks to town every day, finding something different to do each time.

Review of 'Bear about town =' on 'Goodreads'

Great way to approach the days of the week and the places i the city. Our baby loves the Bear's adventures and the places he goes. The illustrations are colourful and engaging and we have read this book for hours. Great fun and good translations too!

John C. Maxwell: Leadership 101 (Hardcover, 2002, Thomas Nelson)

Review of 'Leadership 101' on 'Goodreads'

It's short and sweet. Perhaps the ideas on it are pretty much what you would expect, common sense business speak. I found it to be a good starting point for my personal development, but I have issues with the religious conservative ideology that makes up the framework of the thinking of Mister Maxwell.
All in all, not a bad read with lots of pointers that help organise your personal journey in leadership and team management.

Danny Katch: Socialism...Seriously (Paperback, 2015, Haymarket Books)

Opinion polls show that many people in the U.S. prefer socialism to capitalism. But after …

Review of 'Socialism...seriously' on 'Goodreads'

It's a very fun, humorous and light-hearted introduction to Marxism and what it really means in today's world.
I must say it is one of those books that ends faster then you expect it too and it also gives you a lot of pointers to other books, movies and cultural references, should you wish to go further.
So, if like me, you didn't really understand much about socialism, communism, Marxism and all the different flavours of left-wing ideas, it is a great book to start and also have a laugh while you are at it.
It is a bit America-centered, but that is what you get with American authors. It's not bad though, he is pretty self aware and doesn't ride a high horse.

Bill Martin, Charles Dean Miller: Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? (1996, Henry Holt and Co.)

Review of 'Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?' on 'Goodreads'

My son loves this book. And it is really fun to read together.
There isn't much of a story to be quite honest, but it makes for a great introduction to colours and animals.
It has also been invaluable to keep the baby still while we change his nappy. He loves the illustrations and trying to predict what the next animal will be.
