As they observed in the WvL podcast, this book both anticipated and satirized post-scarcity luxury gay space communism stories decades in advance. But they didn't note that it also anticipated vaporwave! The whole design of the city of Four BEE is greek revival architecture with mists and rainbows and bird-planes and artistically designed sunsets and cloud resorts and canals with bubble boats and robot swans.

It took me forever to finish @adapalmer@wandering.shop's book but it's the most interesting history I've read since Charles Mann's 1491 (roughly the same time period too!)

Obsession & folly
4 stars
A strange and fun (and short!) recounting of the author’s obsession with a failed polar expedition a century before.
The ebook’s formatting makes parts of it very difficult to read on an epaper tablet - this is probably better on a regular screen or real paper.
