It's a wonder that this book is so under-mentioned and neglected in the Alan Moore canon. It's a tour de force in terms of achievement. To take well-known characters in literature and reinterpret and recontextualize them purely as sexual beings, and doing it without demeaning or diminishing their essence, is – to use an oft-misused word – genius.

Once upon a time, I found this book funny. Now it just feels like a bunch of wannabe meme panels thrown together. Explosions! Exclamation marks!!! Comic book violence!!!! Characters being sassy and ironic and full of sarcasm, because that's so cool.

Ok, yeah. I am obsessed with the book and movie. The making-of story is a tale worth telling, with its ecstatic ups and nail-biting downs.

It's a wonder that I never realized that the designer of the iconic book cover and movie poster, with the hands holding the crucifix/puppet strings was a Japanese-American designer named S Neil Fujita, who was interned during WWII. He was also known for iconic Jazz album covers for Columbia recordings, including Dave Brubeck's Time Out.
