I'm mostly a sci-fi reader, preferring happy feelgood stories, and competency porn, but reading a lot of different stuff makes me happy :)

Skyler Ramirez: The Worst Spies in the Sector (2023, House of Valencia Inc DBA Persephone Entertainment Inc.)

It sucks being dead...... especially when you're broke. Former Captain Brad Mendoza and former Commander …

Fun book with some issues

I picked this up as a short interlude between some a bit more serious books, it's a fun little action type book, and I kind of enjoyed the first one, so why not, well, I kind of enjoyed this one as well, and I will probably read the next one and kind of enjoy that one as well.

The biggest issue for me was that the foreword claims "it's a clean book with no foul language, or graphic scenes" When I read through the book and it has multiple graphic murders, a male protagonist with constant male gaze continuously leering at any woman around him, multiple mentions of previous rapes, threats of rape, and something very close to torture.. But to say fuck, or a consensual sex scene would be over the line?

Elizabeth Moon: Once a hero (1997, Baen Books)

Esmay Suiza wasn't a member of a great Navy family like the Serranos. She'd had …

New Protagonist, and one that really hit me

I really enjoyed this one, it felt more like 3 stories about the same person, that kind of wouldn't work in isolation.

Then again I'm a sucker for these stories about a hyper competent young person joining the military for some reason, I don't really know why, but I always find them really enjoyable.

C.J. Cherryh: The Pride of Chanur (Alliance-Union Universe) (Paperback, 1982, DAW)

No one at Meetpoint Station had ever seen a creature like the Outsider. Naked-hided, blunt …

First contact with an interesting twist

I really enjoyed this one, I have enjoyed a lot of Cherryh's books, this one is a bit lighter on politics than most of them are, and it's a quite fun story with alien aliens and a fun universe and some fun characters, I at least really enjoyed this one.

Elizabeth Moon: Winning Colors (1995)

Winning Colors is the third novel in the space opera, military science fiction Familias Regnant …

Great book a bit much horsing

A lot of horses in this book, but it was pretty good, a bit worried about the wanking off rich people that happens here, but that is rather standard in much sci-fi

Ilona Andrews: The Kinsmen Universe (Paperback, 2018, Nancy Yost Literary Agency, Inc)

** PREVIOUSLY PUBLISHED - This is an anthology edition of the Kinsmen Universe, which includes …

Good shorter story collection

I did enjoy these, even though the characters were a bit too stereotypically beautiful, decent stories that felt shorter than they should be, which can be a blessing and a curse.

Jessie Mihalik: Capture the Sun (2023, HarperCollins Publishers)

Acclaimed author Jessie Mihalik returns with the thrilling conclusion to her Starlight's Shadow trilogy. An …

Really enjoyable and fun

This was a really fun reread, As the other ones in the series it has just the right amount of action and tugging at my heartstrings.

reviewed Hunting Party by Elizabeth Moon (The Serrano Legacy #1)

Elizabeth Moon: Hunting Party (Paperback, 1999, Orbit)

Really enjoyable

I enjoyed this book a lot, I thought I would, since I've really enjoyed most of the other books that Moon has written, For some reason the hunting scenes of the island kind of freaked me out, and I usually don't get freaked out with books, so that's kind of interesting.

reviewed Hunt the Stars by Jessie Mihalik (Starlight's Shadow, #1)

Jessie Mihalik: Hunt the Stars (Paperback, 2022, Harper Voyager)

Just as much fun on the second read as the first

I really needed something light and fun after the otehr one, and this was perfect, really enjoyed it.

reviewed Destroyer by C.J. Cherryh (Foreigner (7))

C.J. Cherryh: Destroyer (Paperback, 2005, DAW)

Good book, but heavy politicking

I really enjoyed reading through this book, it felt a lot more cozy and close, and less bleak than the other ones in the series I think, it was nice to see Bren really starting to have some more successful relationships, and it just felt good. Like always in these books though, there is a lot of politics, and the book is written in a more literary fashion, which does have some nice turns of phrase like "The sun slipped over the horizon" and stuff like that, but it somehow really tires me out to read things like that for a long time :p

Still really enjoying this book, but I need something a lot more light after this one, and I'm kind of planning to reread some favourites to cleanse the palate a bit :)

I'm positively surprised about this book so far, yeah it is slow, as all the books in the foreigner series are, but usually I find Cherryh to have kind of a cold and clinical style of writing, in this one it feels way better, I'm not sure if she was writing different or I am reading different, but it's nice, and that's what counts.

reviewed Starship For Sale by M.R. Forbes (Starship for Sale, #1)

M.R. Forbes: Starship For Sale (EBook)

Gets decent, but horrible start

I did quit reading this one about half a year ago because I got really enough of the sappy empathy bait start, it really felt like a cheap shot for no real reason. I was not a big fan of about the first 3rd of the book, but it got better as it went, so in the end it was quite an okay read. I think I will go on to the next one to see if the writing keeps on getting better, or at least stays on the level that it was at the end of the book, all in all, I don't know.
