Great adventure with minimal breaks for plotting the next big thing.

A reader of LitRPG, progression fantasy, xianxia, wuxia and other modern pulp fantasy. Sometimes ventures out into “real” literature and reads things like “Seeing Like a State” by James C. Scott or “Dancing in the Glory of Monsters” by Jason Stearns. Mainly reads stuff on www.royalroad.com/ , but if authors “publish” their book outside, I will try to remember to update my list here.

Chunkier than the last books. Now the focus is beginning to shift towards gaining strength and defending the world from outside threads, rather than feeding it. Still, the MC can not use his full strength, so other characters have their place in the story.

I have two gripes with this book. My first one is that it feels like the author escalated the scale of conflict faster than, the main character grows in power and skill. This resulted in some weird tournament like solution to a world ending war, to make the main character relevant to the story. Which to me is astounding, as my second gripe with the story is that the main character grows in power way too quickly (we have characters that have grown their skill in martial arts and cultivation level for centuries, yet the main character caught up in like 3 years) but it is a common issue, or even a feature of power fantasy type stories. Just that, in combination with even faster escalating threat level, it does not make the main character feel powerful.

A good beginning, and an interesting sci-fi world that is left unused to focus on just playing a MMORPG. Maybe the author comes back to the exciting stuff (addiction to advancement, difference between a simulant and a conscious person, other sci-fi elements). My only misgiving to the first book is a creepy attitude toward women, but in the first book there are mostly men, so it isn't too bad to read. The second book I won't review because I dropped it. The story turned into a work where everything revolves around the main character.
