Terry Pratchett: Small Gods (Hardcover, 1992, Orion Publishing Co)

'Just because you can't explain it, doesn't mean it's a miracle.' In the beginning was …

my first dip into Discworld

My first Discworld novel, first Pratchett novel actually, regrettably out of order but there are forty-one novels in the series and they dribble in randomly at the neighborhood used book store. It's a hoot, something quotable on nearly every page, and Monty Pythonesque (shades of Life of Brian). Relatively slow at the beginning and end but excels when the one-on-one sketch-like dialogue is going. There are hints of ethnic stereotyping (again, Pythonesque, reminds me of the uncomfortable aspects of Fawlty Towers) and no women with speaking lines, so I wouldn't say it's perfect. But it's a fun jab at religion and philosophy and if you want them there are deep thoughts.
