cute and realistic but hopeful

(Review of Volume 5)

Who knew that job hunting is, apart from finding something affordable, that difficult for same-sex couples. The fact that rental companies even want to know so many details about what you do in the bedroom is pretty gross. Though I appreciate the mangaka for bringing this up and shedding light on these struggles! Learned something new. (And hopefully it also helps to stop westerners from idolizing Japan so much! I do love Japan, don't get me wrong, but it's far from perfect.)

But hey, they did find something in the end! Truly felt like a "too good to be true" kinda moment. I cried, ngl. Bet the mangaka only did this, so they stay within the hopeful vibe of the manga overall. I don't mind that much – I wouldn't be reading fictional stories, if I need realism in everything. Hope and utopia are good tropes in queer stories!

That said, the characters got me swooning again!! u3u
Especially the consent chapter with hugging, touching each other's faces, holding hands in a couple-like way, sleeping in the same bed, and … read for yourself! They're too cute. I'm glad Yuki had Yoko as her "lesbian mentor".

Also, Sena got an official diagnosis on her deipnophobia, which was great! Didn't know you can actually get that diagnosed by a doctor – I assumed it's just self-diagnosis as with pretty much any anxiety disorder. But it's nice to have that kind of disability representation, too, of course! I'm very curious how the mangaka will explore the therapy for the phobia. Or whether Sena will actually start therapy any soon, since she got friends around her now who accept and respect her the way she is.
I'm a little envious of Sena's friends at this point, though. Not in a bad way, I'm glad she has them – but it's still so unfair that she has them and I don't. These kinda people don't even seem to exist anywhere near me. Got me tearing up, too.

Also, regarding my vegan comment last volume: we got more vegan rep this time, yay! They were eating vegan meatballs at a restaurant and Yuki said she wants to try out more vegan alternatives (she calls it meat substitutes) to meat dishes. Double yay!! Can't wait for that. :3

But now I must go and watch the 2nd season of the tv show!! See ya in next volume! <3
