Claire Freedman: Dinosaurs Love Underpants (2008, Simon & Schuster Children's) 2 stars

Illustrations and rhyming text reveal the Mighty Underpants War as the true reason dinosaurs are …

Cute enough.

I often find issues with books that have dialectal rhymes (saw/more) when there isn't a pronunciation guide or accompanying audio, which halts me immediately and makes it hard to read. (And when you think about it, far more English dialects -- even in the original market -- are not going to rhyme these two words together; it's very specific to particular handfuls of English dialects, meaning it should've had an accompanying audio.) You'll also get tripped up on at least one dinosaur name, which makes the reading weird.

Also, while it's silly and has cute illustrations? The story is rubbish and doesn't work at all. There could've been far more opportunities to make it better, something more engaging and interesting. (And if you have a child who knows their science/history and is really keen that you be correct about it? They may not be pleased with dinosaurs and early man at the same time; I found this out by reading it to a group of first graders.)
