One of my favourite books of the year. Not sure exactly what I loved about it but Toru Okada's journey to find his wife's missing cat and then his wife pulled me in. Everything about this book is supremely weird and made me want to contemplate life at the bottom of a well. (in a good way)

This book marked the beginning of my "fall of civilization autumn" - My plan to read some key post-apocalyptic / sci-fi literature.

This book was a fun and an easy read. I enjoyed the narration of Griz and their journey through a desolate and mostly empty world brought about by an epidemic and fertility crisis. After a stranger comes to visit Griz and his family's isolated island off the Scottish coast and takes off with his dog. Here begins the adventure as Griz sets off to get the dogs back.

There are characters met along the way. The dialogue with John Dark is a bit annoying. Otherwise the book has solid world-building and, for such a bleak story, is quite uplifting and hopeful.

Twist at the end is telegraphed in the author's prologue - when you point out that there is a secret that you don't want readers to spoil …
