Delightful find at my local library

4 stars

I came across this book at the library, and, having heard of the associated podcast I decided to give it a try.

I've never actually listened to said podcast, and if I'm being honest I'm not a huge fan of the McElroy Family family of podcasts in general.

That said, this was a delightful read. As with other recent D&D live play adaptations into other media (see: "The Legend of Vox Machina") it really does capture the spontaneous humor of play at the table, while (I assume) cleaning up some of the diversions and focusing on the plot. I enjoyed the DM interjections in particular.

Definitely a fun read, and I'll be on the lookout for others in the series.

A Great Adaptation

3 stars

I started listening to The Adventure Zone podcast while this story was being played, so reading this comic was revisiting characters, story and tone I'm very familiar with. This adaptation of the first story arc of the podcast is exceptionally well done. Breaking the fourth wall with the DM was a good fit for including the dynamics of an actual play with a fun fantasy story that packs in goofs, heart and surprises.

I might be biased because The Eleventh Hour is my favorite arc of TAZ, but HOLY SHIT this book is gorgeous. Several panels brought me to tears (which isn't a first for this series stares at Crystal Kingdom) and took my breath away. These adaptations really do feel like consuming the series for the first time all over again and I cannot get enough!

I've only listened to bits and pieces of The Adventure Zone podcast, but this graphic novel was fantastic! The artwork is great, with lots of little details that help bring the settings and characters to life, and the dialogue really closely matches the first episode (that I've listened to so far). I laughed out loud a bunch of times, and am desperately awaiting the next installment!
