Chayka's book is interesting -- if perhaps a tad too long -- and captures one of the central challenges that we face in our modern culture, the fact that so many facets of our modern culture are being pushed on us by algorithmic recommendations, leading to a flatness and sameness. Perhaps the most interesting part of the book for me was a chapter near the end, where Chayka described cutting himself off from Twitter, Spotify, Instagram, and other forms of social media and attempting to sample culture as he did prior to the Internet. The book includes a good description of the importance of curation by actual human beings in helping people discover new things. Since we are here on Bookwyrm, I will point out that I wish Chayka had explored a bit of the fediverse and its possibilities as an alternative to commercial social media.
