Very fun read, glad I finally got around to it. A smidge to absurd for me at times but I’m still excited for the rest of the series.
Especially since I don’t know them beat for beat yet from a movie

So the story of the white whale had become my white whale. Not sure if that’s ironic or appropriate. But hey, only took me on an off 2 years to finish this…

This is a difficult one to review. Absolutely loved the beginning with just Ishmael and Queequeg but then the story really lost steam for most of the book.

Dense language and highly specific and partially translated outdated whale and whaling info does not make for the most riveting read, certainly not for hundreds of pages.

Still, I’m a sucker for maritime adventure stories and I enjoyed this way more than I should have. Will probably revisit favorite sections in the future but see no reason to read the book in its entirety again.

Important topic, just not written with the care it deserves.

The author does more wondering about stuff than Carrie Bradshaw, while otherwise padding things out with repetitions of both facts and anecdotes (We get it, you enjoy swimming in nature!). It's particularly bad given the brevity of the book.

There were also a few instances of unrelated topics just being thrown into paragraphs as apparently the author didn't manage to find a good spot for them.

A thorough go with an editor would have much improved this book. In its current state it felt more like a long mediocre blogpost than something that should have been published in book form.
