In the mid-21st century, major world cities are controlled by a formidable security force, and clairvoyant underworld cell member Paige commits acts of psychic treason before being captured by an otherworldly race that would make her a part of their supernatural army.

Still thinking about the fact that Samantha Shannon was 22 when this got published... What a talented person
This book got solid worldbuilding about people with powers, street gang, secrets behind this dystopian future London... I can't wait to see how it expands in the future books
The writing was fluid and easy, the characters were cool, Paige is a brave, touching young women with a strong spirit (and power), the secondary characters could have been developped more but otherwise I really don't have anything to say, it was so good^^ (Well, I could have done with more romance but that's a personal preference lol)
Also flexing that I bought a used copy of this years ago and discovered that it was actually signed, with a date... 18th of September of 2013, so happy anniversary (??) haha
Lovely world building, lots of new slang but you get it eventually just like Clockwork Orange. Alternate history done very well in much of the story, good parallel structure to the main character’s development.
Would be excellent if not for the romance plot and warping of the story to accommodate it.
I do kind of see why people may not like this book. I also see why people say that they may need a glossary when reading it. All that aside, I absolutely adored this book. The main character doesn't take any punches, and she's sure not a whiner, which makes me like her all that much more. She's got a good head for a 19-year-old, and that's so refreshing to see.
I also liked the world building, but I sort of wish that there were more descriptions of what the voients were, and how their powers worked. :)
When you get a third of the way into a book, put it aside to do other things, and then realise you don't really care if you pick it up again, it's never a good sign.
Either I failed to engage with this book or it failed to engage with me.I'm not really drawn to stories about ghosts, spirits, or anything supernatural and this certainly failed to overcome my resistance. Above all I didn't care about any of the characters. I also found it (surprisingly) lacking in atmosphere. This volume went back to the library unfinished and I won't be bothering with any sequel(s).
Loved how migraines are part of the hero's superpower. Very fun read.
One of the best debuts I have ever read. Simply outstanding.
