Gathered from years of interviews, this is one of the best accounts of the human impact of Chernobyl. I loved this book, but be warned it is gruesome and brutal in places.

Après avoir vu la "Chernobyl" de HBO, j'ai voulu approfondir le sujet en lisant une des (nombreuses) sources utilisées par les scénaristes. Je m'attendais à du journalisme, à quelque chose d'un peu factuel. Je ne m'attendais pas à ce collage de témoignages bouleversants, tantôt poétiques, tantôt crus, souvent les deux.

Svetlana Alexeievich se met en retrait pour laisser toute la place au chœur des voix discordantes de Tchernobyl : les passionnés, les déçus, les incrédules, les convaincus, les victimes, ceux et celles qui restent... Il ne s'agit pas d'un simple reportage : Tchernobyl est ici prétexte à poser de nombreuses questions existentielles sur notre rapport au pouvoir, à la science, et à nous-mêmes.

The narrative of the aftermath of Chernobyl told through interviews of people from the region. Alexievich choreographs and curates the stories without devising from the interview passages, constructing a story that is accessible, legible and brilliantly mined from the voices of a voiceless mass. Touching and heart-breaking, but truly worth reading.
