Dial H.

China Mieville's The City and The City was so good that, when I heard he wanted to write a comic book for DC, I made sure to pick it up. Dial H has some great characters, and the story is small and tightly-controlled (unusual for DC). But I'm sorry to say the art really lets the reader down here. Muddy, unclear action forced me again and again to peer and guess and extrapolate what was really going on, and in many stretches the art is simply bad. I've read enough graphic novels now to know that clarity in a story-based work is a primary goal of the art, and it wasn't achieved here. Still, overall the story itself was enjoyable, but this isn't a graphic novel I'd recommend as an exemplar of the form.
