"Meet Greta Helsing, fast-talking doctor to the undead. Keeping the supernatural community not-alive and well in London has been her family's specialty for generations. Greta Helsing inherited the family's highly specialized, and highly peculiar, medical practice. In her consulting rooms, Dr. Helsing treats the undead for a host of ills - vocal strain in banshees, arthritis in barrow-wights, and entropy in mummies. Although barely making ends meet, this is just the quiet, supernatural-adjacent life Greta's been groomed for since childhood. Until a sect of murderous monks emerges, killing human and undead Londoners alike. As terror takes hold of the city, Greta must use her unusual skills to stop the cult if she hopes to save her practice, and her life"--

A medical-flavored mystery with a down to earth sense of urban fantasy to it. The descriptions are particularly wonderful and manage to escape getting too florid. Fun magic/infernal system, skillfully revealed. Gentle presence of social anxiety lending depth and comfort to the characters. I wish the recording had a better (or perhaps any) pop filter but that’s not the fault of the text. Excited to see more of the series.

Demons and Vampires and Ghouls (and Monsters and Devils in general): OH MY!! What a delightful sci-fi/fantasy experience :-)
As you probably know, my primary genre is mystery-thriller, but I tend to like a few sci-fi/fantasy (and other genres). Also, I liked this. The setting was unusual but relevant to the story, and there's surprises and personal developments were good. I wonder what the other two books in the series hold.

Like me, you may be expecting some sort of steampunky Victoriana. Well, you're wrong! This is a contemporary cozy mystery that just happens to involve a lot of supernatural characters. It's a great Halloween read in a suboptimal year.

This is a great idea. A lot of the monsters from old horror stories are here. Dr. Helsing is trying to keep a practice afloat while having to keep her patients a secret.

I had a hard time remembering at points that this is a contemporary story. It kept feeling like it was a Victorian to me and then there would be modern technology.

It was well done. There are sequels planned and I will definitely read them. This review was originally posted on Based On A True Story
