Hell House

I liked this, but wanted there to be more to it. I think Matheson isn't as successful here as Jackson's The Haunting of Hill House (to compare a haunted house to another) in some aspects because he appears to consider sexual violence as the ultimate horror when it can often seem so commonly exploited in fiction as to be banal rather than tense and shocking. While this book is absolutely not a waste of time, it's not exactly action-packed, surprising, or narratively fulfilling.

Hell House è stato perfetto, ma imperfetto. A mio avviso è stato un libro eccezionale. E' stato perfettamente disturbante quanto basta e ho amato questa sua caratteristica. Di Matheson avevo letto solo Io sono leggenda (di cui ho visto pure il film) quindi sapevo (ma anche no) a cosa andavo incontro leggendo questo libro. E' stato disturbante in alcuni punti e spaventoso in molte maniere, alle volte persino orribile. Però l'ho amato, davvero! E' stato un bellissimo mix di cose che mi aggradano e mi sono veramente appassionata a questa lettura.

Lots of sexual assault, and women getting possessed and ripping their shirts off. Some homophobia. Characters a little basic, the main "twist"(?) was kinda what they set you up for from the beginning. Lots of terrible things happen, but I don't get the fear or dread that I get from Shirley Jackson's work, for example.

Holy Crap. Easily the most disturbing, intense, scary read I've had in nonfiction...I couldn't stop until I'd finished it, even with a bad head cold. That was a crazy ride, and the visuals...whoa. Disturbing and a half.

Campy but awesome!
