Big Little Lies

Despite the occasional descriptions of this book as chick lit, and indeed it alternates almost entirely among the points of view of the main women characters with the males providing (mostly) comic relief, I found this story engaging and hilarious, somehow balancing the lighthearted tone against the increasing underlying seriousness. At nearly five hundred pages, I found myself slowing down toward the final stretch thinking, OK, I can see where this is going, let's wrap it up, but the ending was gratifying and still somewhat unexpected.

The victim was unexpected! I went into this book thinking that it was a mystery, but upon rechecking with audible it's simply listed as contemporary fiction. This is good, because it isn't a mystery, but in the broader idea of mystery – not a murder mystery, for instance – it is kind of a mystery: a mystery of interactions and prejudices amongst people. The format of the story was unusual, but it both kept the story going and The reader interested. All of the interpersonal details were critical and made for an embracing tale. There was, in the end, a murder – sort of – and all of the secrets within the community had an effect on relationships and personal interactions.

One of my top 3 of the year. Loved it. Loved the hbo miniseries too.

A pretty enjoyable book. the three main characters had their different story lines but I liked the way that they were brought together. There was a bit of humor in the book, but some seriousness as well
There were also some twists that I never saw coming, and for that, I kept reading.

My sister recommended this book to me, and I really ended up enjoying it. It was part mystery, part chick-lit, and a voyeuristic dive into the characters' private lives. We follow various families all tied together through their children's elementary school, and it examines the lies we tell others and ourselves, both big and small. The subject matter hit really close to home with a couple of characters' story lines. It makes you think about your life, your friends' lives, and how things aren't always what they seem.

I really didn't guess at the ending and it really kept me engaged throughout. Good stuff and not my typical read. I will read others by her.

Ah yes! Liane Moriarty never disappoints! What a fascinating, sharp and funny story which is never getting boring. I felt so entertained, laughing at witty comments and plot-"let-us-call-them-twists" which caught me by surprise. Until the last chapter you cannot guess what has happened on this mysterious trivia night - of course it didn't stop me from guessing and I really couldn't figure out. Really really good book which I can highly recommend. By the way, my favourite character is Madeleine. So. Funny. And badass!

There will be a TV series starring Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman. I'm very curious who they will play! Reese would fit as Madeleine and Nicole as Renata or Harper maybe?!

Really enjoyed, totally didn't predict the ending.

Liane Moriarty's books are designed for consumption on a beach with a limited attention span. And yet... she's able to construct characters you care about, put them in interesting situations, and have a plot twist that feels rewarding in its payoff. Perhaps I consider her books a bit trashy, but it still takes talent to weave the way she does. For anyone looking for mindless escapism to Australia (and the drama of small town parents), she's got you covered.
